DA: Plover teen shot two friends, stabbed his mother after "freaking out"

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - A Plover teenager was charged with five felonies Monday in an early-morning attack that left two friends shot and the teen's mother stabbed after a night of drinking and smoking pot.

Alec Varney, 18, was also charged with five misdemeanors, including battery of his father, in the April 26 incident about 4:45 a.m. at a home in Town of Plover. A judge ordered him jailed on $1 million cash bond.

Two 19-year-old men told investigators Varney shot them with a shotgun after "freaking out, pacing and making statements" alleging they wanted to kill Varney and his family, according to the criminal complaint.

The friends had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana and were ”about to make food” when the mood suddenly shifted, the complaint said.

One of the victims said Varney got a shotgun and pointed it at the other friend, “looking down the sights,” prompting the friend to reach under a couch and try to retrieve a .22-caliber rifle, the complaint said. Varney fired once, hitting both teens.

The "loud bang" awakened Varney's parents who rushed to the basement, the complaint said.

Varney's mother asked what was going on and he "continued screaming" before attacking her with a "big knife" and cutting her hand and wrestling his father to the floor, the complaint said.

The parents fled back upstairs and locked themselves in their bedroom before calling police, the complaint said.

One of the wounded teens fled the home and was taken to a hospital by a friend, the document said. Varney fled the home too and was arrested without incident after a nearly 10-hour manhunt. He has been jailed on a $100,000 cash bond since his arrest.
