'SpaghettiO's' turns 53

An iconic childhood staple for many is celebrating a birthday Wednesday.

SpaghettiOs graced grocery store shelves for the first time on May 16, 1965. Now, 53 years later, the "neat, round spaghetti you can eat with a spoon" is still going strong.

The pasta's origin is rooted in Waukesha, where creator Donald Goerke invented the meal. The University of Wisconsin - Madison graduate was a mainstay at Campbell Soup Company, where he helped introduce over 100 products, such as Chunky soup.

The products garnered $500 million in company sales during his 35-year-career, but the easy-to-eat kids meal remains the standout, setting pop culture ablaze with the help of the catchy jingle, "Uh oh, SpaghettiOs."

Goerke died from heart failure in 2010, but his legacy lives on as 175 million cans of SpaghettiOs were sold annually at the time of his death.
