Husband, wife and daughter graduate together from Mid-State Technical College

The Wisconsin Rapids Mid-State gymnasium was packed Thursday evening for graduation. Among those hundreds of attendees and graduates was a family ready to receive diplomas.

"It was nice having someone to do it with," said Sierra Rehberg, daughter of Deanna and Shawn. "It made it a lot more fun."

"When she decided to go back, it pushed me to pursue something I've always wanted to do," said Deanna Rehberg. "And to be able to do it with my daughter, it's just been amazing."

"It was a competition," said Shawn Rehberg. "I mean, she got the 4.0 and beat us all, and she let us know that, but it was just the support when we needed it that made it really great."

Shawn started school after his wife and daughter, which meant he had to take accelerated courses to graduate at the same time. School officials said it was a unique and touching event.

"We're so excited to have the Rehberg family as a part of our legacy here at Mid State," said Mid-State VP Bobbi Damrow. "We're not aware of a full family graduating together [before] and we just think it's a wonderful story."

"But those two, I'm so proud," said Sierra Rehberg. "They hadn't gotten a degree. I was going to be the first one in the family and then they both jumped in, like, 'Hey, we can do this too.' And it's like, yeah! Let's all do it."

The family agreed that the goal was, at times, intimidating. All three work full time jobs, but they worried about climbing into debt. However, through a series of grants, scholarships and a paid internship the family graduated debt-free.

In the end, they said the time and effort was worth it.

The family says they have a son who will also study criminal justice at Mid-State.
