Wausau furniture store closes after four decades

After thriving in Marathon County for more than 40 years, the doors of a furniture store are soon closing.

The Helke Furniture Company is an authorized Ethan Allen retailer in Wausau. The Helke family owned the store for 47 years.

The tradition of house furniture and interior design goes back more than a century in the family.

"It's been in my blood for 144 years," said president of the company Sara Helke.

The store sold rugs, tables, bedding, and other household needs.

Helke said the shift in demographics in the past year has caused the sales to drop.

"Maybe people are shopping online, finding individual pieces and there's Pinterest that makes it's easier," she said.

The store will hold a three day sale before closing the doors on Sunday.
