Badger State Games trap shooting comes to Marathon Co.

The Badger State games continued with a bang as the Trap shooting event took place at the Marathon County Trap and Sportsman's club Saturday.

Club President and Badger State Games commissioner Jeffrey Fochs explains exactly how the event is structured.

"Each participant shoots 100 birds," said Fochs. "25 birds in a round and they shoot four rounds, so they're shooting 100 birds."

The participants are split into different groups depending on age and gender.

The winners of the groups are determined by adding up the total number of clay's hit out of the 100, with first place hitting the most.

This year's tournament saw close to 90 shooters trying for the title of top shot, which is a record turnout for the event.

The range of age and diversity of this years competitors caught Foch's eye.

"We've got kids out here, we've got grandpa's out here. We've got great grandpa's out here," Fochs said.

The amount of youth that was out there also caught the eye of long time trap shooter and competitor Robert Antoniewicz.

"It's awesome to see," Antoniewicz said.  "They are a new era coming up and it's good to see that they are enjoying  shooting some trap."

Antoniewicz is also encouraged to see that the popularity of the sport of trap shooting seems to be growing.

"There are a lot of things out there that are dying off, where trap seems to be growing," said Antoniewicz.

Antoniewicz also had some advice for any shooters looking to add to the growing number of those trap shooting.

"Keep your head down on the stock," he said. "They call it peeking, and when you're peeking you're going to miss the bird."

While the Badger Games may be over,  Jeffrey Fochs encourages anyone that may be curious about shooting to come out and try.

"Anybody that hasn't tried it, come on out and try it," Fochs said.  "You don't have to have a gun. Come on out and we'll find you a gun and let you try it and find out how much you like it."
