Marathon Co. may put medical marijuana on November ballot

The Marathon County board moved Monday to consider adding legalizing medical marijuana to the November ballot as an advisory referendum.

The decision passed the Health and Human Services Committee, and will now go to the full board.

Medical marijuana is legal in 29 states, including neighboring Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan, but not here in Wisconsin.

Only state lawmakers can actually legalize using the drug for medical purposes, but if counties determine their voters are interested in doing so, county officials can push state legislators.

"So what we would do is say 'Hey, we asked our community what they thought of this, and these are the results,'" said board member Katie Rosenberg.

Although the motion moved forward Monday, some board members questioned whether the public possessed the right amount of knowledge to make an informed decision.

The full board will take on the issue next month.
