Sparklers leading cause of fireworks injuries to young kids

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

Sparklers account for 61 percent of firework injuries to kids under the age of five.

Experts said sparklers can get up to 3,000 degrees.

"I think a lot of people are surprised on how hot sparklers get," said Wausau Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Kopp. "We gotta keep in mind we're having kids hold something that's between 1,800 and 3,000 degrees a couple inches from their fingers and sparks are going all over."

In 2017, a 4-year-old Clintonville girl died after police said her dad stuffed a metal pipe full of sparklers and shrapnel went everywhere.

It's not just sparklers that pose dangers for fireworks. The Wausau Police Department posted dashcam video from two years ago that showed fireworks shooting everywhere including near homes, people and cars. Examples similar to that can be found all over Youtube.

"If you don't use it properly and you use it wrong that's where things go wrong and ER visits spike across the country," said Kopp.

Experts said wooden sparklers can be safer then the metal option, at least in kid's hands.
