An eight-year-old Wausau girl was injured when she ran across a busy street on the city's west side and was hit by a car just before a fireworks show at Marathon Park, according to a police report.

The incident happened about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on Sherman Street at 17th Avenue, the report said.

The girl was taken by ambulance to Aspirus Hospital with suspected serious injuries, the report said. Her father said Thursday she was transferred to Marshfield Children's Hospital with serious head injuries.

The driver of the car, a 52-year-old Wausau man, told investigators he was traveling westbound "when suddenly a girl ran in front of his car," the report said.

The driver supplied dash camera video of the incident "which showed the female running outside of a crosswalk, across the four-lane street before being struck by the front right corner of his vehicle," police reported.

The girl was running northbound, toward Marathon Park, the report said. Her father said his family and many people were in the area at the time because of the upcoming fireworks show.
