WAUSAU (WAOW) - The past commander of Wausau's American Legion Post 10 is awarded a Jefferson Award for his volunteer activities.

Paul Missett is a longtime  member of the Legion Honor Guard. "We do about 70 military funerals a year to honor our veterans that have passed away. It is a great honor to serve," he said.

As chairman of the Wausau Veterans Committee, Missett also helps organize many events and activities honoring veterans.

"We set up the Memorial Day Parade and the Veterans Day Program and we do things in the schools so students can help veterans who are in need," Missett  said. "We also go to the schools and teach the students about flags and flag etiquette."

Legion members praise Missett's willingness to serve.

"Paul has done a lot of work helping the veterans in the community and it is great he is recognized for his efforts," Legion Liason Officer Tom Passow said.

Born and raised in Boston to a family with a long history of military service, Missett joined the Marines in 1969.

"I was with the MP's and security at a nuclear base and we would have to take care of the nuclear missiles that were brought in on the nuclear subs," Missett said.

He left the military in 1975 and moved west to make Wausau his home after visiting his sister here.

"The schools, the churches, everything was so nice we decided to stay here," Missett said. "Wausau is also very patriotic. They really do want the military to be part of the community. It is an honor to be part of that."
