RHINELANDER (WAOW) - A 41-year-old father had loaded guns inside his home and developed a plan to kill police officers who were investigating a complaint of physical abuse of a child, Rhinelander Police Chief Lloyd Gauthier Jr. said Friday.

The incident that led to the arrest of Dwight Schleif happened about 10 a.m. Thursday after the angry father refused to let officers into his home but allowed a child to go outside to speak to them, Gauthier said in a statement.

Concerned for the child's welfare and learning the father had guns inside, the officers left and took the child to the police department, the police chief said.

"The father called requesting numerous times for the officers to come back to the residence to talk," Gauthier said. Eventually, the father arrived at the police department and was arrested.

"During the investigation, it was revealed the father loaded two guns inside the residence while the officers were outside, with the intent to the kill the officers when they returned to the front door," the police chief said. "The father had developed a plan and strategically placed the firearms inside of the residence to accomplish his plan."

Schleif was charged Friday with seven felonies, including attempted first-degree intentional homicide, child abuse and causing mental harm to a child, according to online Oneida County court records. A judge ordered him jailed on a $50,000 cash bond.
