Wausau kicks off free swim Sundays

The City of Wausau kicked off its free swim days on Sunday at Kaiser Pool.

Residents made a splash to beat the summer heat and to save some cash.

People of all ages enjoyed splashing around and enjoying a free day in the pool.

"This is probably the first time I've been to Kaiser Pool in ten years," Cally Blom of Wausau said.

"I like the slides," Charley Terch said. "The blue one is faster."

The Wausau Parks and Rec Committee decided to add these free swim days to make the pools more accessible to the community.

"There's a lot of people who cannot afford to come to the pool," Blom added.

Opening the pool for free, however, comes at a cost.

Officials said the three area pools combined typically bring in five hundred dollars on any given Sunday.

They're predicting it could mean more cash in the long run.

"Bringing in more people," Aquatics Director Nichole Saal said. "Hopefully bringing in a lot more money at the concession stands and keeping us busy all summer long."

The Wausau Parks and Rec Committee is seeking sponsors for free swim Sundays to make up for the lost funds.

All area pools will rotate which pool is open for free each Sunday, and there are a few other free days as well.

Free swim dates:

Kaiser Pool: Jul. 8, Jul. 11, Jul. 29 and Aug. 17.

Memorial Pool: Jul. 15, Aug. 5 and Aug. 10.

Schulenburg Pool: Jul. 22 and Aug. 10.
