Portage Co. man searching for Purple Heart recipient

A Portage County man is searching for a Purple Heart recipient, or the family of the person.

A Purple Heart is a medal awarded to a member of the armed forces who is injured during war.

For nearly six decades, Greg Slowinski's family has had the Purple Heart of Joseph Wisinski.

"It would mean a lot to me to have the family have this back," said Slowinski.

Slowinski's father owned a men's clothing shop in Stevens Point called Wally's Mens Store. Slowinski said the Purple Heart was given to his father back in the 1960's by a fellow World War II veteran.

"This purple heart was given to my father as collateral for some clothes," said Slowinski.

Slowinski said the man insisted that his father keep the Purple Heart. His father passed away in the 1970's and for years Slowinski wasn't sure where the medal was, until about two weeks ago.

"My mother passed away and we were going through all her stuff and we found it. My sister found it in a dresser," said Slowinski.

The name Joseph Wisinski is etched on the back, and Slowinski believes he was a World War II veteran. News 9 got to work and started doing some research. We reached out to the National Purple Heart of Honor along with anyone we thought may be related to him. So far, the searches have turned up empty, however Slowinski isn't giving up hope.

"The person made a sacrifice in World War II. The family deserves it," said Slowinski.
