Floats causing near drownings in pools

A little girl's close call, getting stuck in a tube while swimming, is serving as a reminder that summer fun can quickly take a dangerous turn.

The two-year-old from New Jersey was rescued from her backyard pool Sunday after getting tangled in two ring floats.

Newark officers responded in about 90 seconds and would end up saving the girls life.

Video from China shows a little boy floating around an indoor pool before it quickly flipped and had him struggling underwater.  He too was rescued and recovered.

First responders in Wausau said these near drownings happen more often than you might think.

"It's not going to look like the movies where they're swinging their arms around and flailing in the water, they're probably going to be moving very slowly or sinking at this point," Quinn Ambrosius of the Wausau Fire Department said.

On average, 980 kids die from drownings each year but according to the Centers for Disease Control 14 children survive a near drowning every day.

Those statistics, a stark reminder, that life jackets are likely the safer option for children while swimming.
