Purple Heart reunited with Stevens Point man

A Purple Heart was reunited with the family of the recipient in Stevens Point Tuesday evening.

Joseph Wisinski served in the Army during World War I. While he passed away years ago, his nephew Ernie still lives in Stevens Point.

Ernie said he still remembers seeing the medal when he was  young.

"It used to hang on the wall in my mother's house I remember that when I was in school," said Wisinski. "A couple times I wondered [where it went], when we cleaned out my mother's house when she died it wasn't there."

The medal has been with Greg Slowinski's family for nearly six decades. Greg said Joseph gave it to his dad years ago at his clothing store as collateral and never came back for it. Greg said for years he didn't know where it was until about two weeks ago. Once he found it, he turned to News 9 for help finding anyone related to Joseph Wisinski.

"My son called me last night, he watched the news and he gave me all the information," said Wisinski.

Tuesday evening, Greg gave the Purple Heart medal to Ernie.

"Now it's home with them, it makes me feel good," said Greg.

Ernie said Joseph didn't have any kids. He still has his flag as well. Ernie said he plans on probably putting it back into a case.
