Downtown Wausau parking changes closer to reality

Parking changes in downtown Wausau are one step closer to becoming a reality. The capital improvements committee voted to change all parking spots to two hours of free parking.

If approved by the full city council, parking lots and ramps would no longer have metered parking and instead pay stations would be put in so you could pay by your license plate instead. Officials voted to implement the ability to pay for parking by an app on your phone called Passport.

A graduated fine schedule will also be put in place for repeat offenders.

Residents and businesses have complained about the parking to the city, saying they were frustrated with different spots having different time restrictions.

The finance committee already approved the funding for the materials needed for the changes.

The changes will go to the full city council Aug. 14.
