Wausau committee approves Safe Route plan for Stettin

A controversial Safe Route plan passed a Wausau committee Thursday evening.

Safe Route is a plan put together on changes they could make for kids to safely walk or bike to Stettin Elementary School. It includes adding sidewalks along with more stop signs and numerous other safety measures.

Kids within a two mile radius of Stettin Elementary School are bused in because some of the routes they could use to walk or bike and considered hazardous.

However, it has drawn quite a bit of controversy in the community. Numerous residents speaking out at the capital improvements committee meeting on their thoughts on the plan.

"Every day when I've asked, talked to some of the playground teachers they say when my child comes or leaves from school they feel very unsafe with that," said parent Shannon Whaples.

But many others don't want the plan to become a project.

"The perception of what's happening, and with this project, it feels pushed on our neighborhood," said resident Jason Gerum.

City officials said it's just a plan and that doesn't mean they'll go forward with any of the changes on it.
