Police: Man stole proceeds from fallen officer fundraiser

A man seen on surveillance video pried open a locked door at a Sobelmans restaurant on Saturday evening and stole hundreds of dollars during a fundraiser in honor of slain Milwaukee police Officer Michael Michalski, police said.

The fundraiser was held Saturday at the Sobelmans restaurant on the 1900 block of West St. Paul Avenue.

Police described the thief as a black man who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a brown baseball cap with a yellow logo on the visor, a red T-shirt, white shorts and black shoes with white soles.

"It's very, very frustrating," Sobelman's owner Dave Sobelman said.

The money was not from the fundraiser for Officer Michalski, but was cash from another restaurant location, Sobelman said.

Michalski was shot and killed July 25 as he closed in on a man wanted on drug and gun violations.

A criminal complaint alleges that Michalski's suspected killer hid in a pile of clothes and then ambushed Michalski as he came in to make the arrest.

The 17-year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department was laid to rest last week after an emotional ceremony at Oak Creek Assembly of God.

Anyone with information on the Sobelman's heist is asked to call police at 414-935-7360.
