Wausau man sent to prison for 4 1/2 years for Sugar Shack robbery

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A 23-year-old Wausau man was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison Tuesday for robbing an ice cream shop more than three years ago, according to online Marathon County court records.

Thomas McKay pleaded no contest to theft and burglary in a deal with prosecutors who amended charges that accused him of being armed with a gun and knife in the May 31, 2015, robbery of the Sugar Shack in Weston, court records.

McKay was given credit for 1,165 days he has spent in jail, meaning slightly more than three years of his prison sentence has already been served, court records said.

The judge also ordered McKay to spend 4 1/2 years on extended supervision when he is released from prison, court records said. Among the conditions are that he have no contact with the Sugar Shack and that for at least 30 hours per week he be employed, attending school or a combination of both. If not, he must perform nine hours of community service weekly.

According to police, McKay, wearing a mask, entered the unlocked ice cream shop and demand money from a female worker who was closing for the night. Sugar Shack's owner said the thief stole about $600.

McKay was implicated in the robbery by a girl who police saw sitting inside a vehicle in a nearby parking lot. A BB gun, knife and some money were discovered near the scene, police said.
