Bus companies searching for new drivers

Just before school starts up for the year, bus companies around the country are looking for more drivers.

According to a report done by School Bus Fleet, nearly 90 percent of school districts in the country are suffering from a bus driver shortage.

The issue hits close to home, in districts in Marathon County and Wood County.

Managers at Lamers Bus Line in Weston said they need 15 to 20 new drivers.

Whether it be for school, sports, or field trips, managers said students and parents depend on buses for transportation.

They said not enough applications are coming in because people think it's too hard to drive the 25,000 lbs vehicle.

"I found that it's a great deal of fun," Sean McCue, Lamers dispatcher said.

To help solve the problem the company is holding a job fair to recruit new employees.

Here are the qualifications needed to be eligible.

  • Good driving record
  • Four years of experience of any vehicle
  • 21 years or older
  • Pass a drug test and background check

During the fair people can learn more about bus safety, speak to current drivers, and even test drive a bus.

The job fair begins at 3 p.m. at the Lamers Bus Line in Weston.
