Three Adams Co. beaches closed due to water conditions

While there's plenty of sunshine to enjoy this summer, Adams County residents won't be able to do so on several beaches anytime soon.

Petenwell, Castle Rock and Lake Arrowhead's beaches have been closed, according to a Facebook post on the Be Healthy Adams County Facebook page.

The post cites "deteriorating water conditions" for the closings, and says they will reopen when conditions improve.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services advises beach-goers of signs to look out for prior to getting in the water, and cites algae in the water as a prime cause of illness.

Symptoms -- not limited to sore throat, sinus congestion and breathing difficulty -- can occur via inhalation of water, while ingestion-based symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain or vomiting.

Meanwhile, contact with the blue-green algae can lead to hives, blisters, skin irritation and eye rashes, per the post.

Symptoms can take effect within hours, and sometimes even minutes, of exposure, according to the post.

Anyone who develops these symptoms is advised to call their doctor or the Wisconsin Poison Center immediately (800-222-1222).
