Class of the Week Winner 9/26/08: Northwoods Community Secondary School

by Natalie Sparacio & Jeannie Prescott

Rhinelander (WAOW) --This morning we kicked off our Class of the Week segment on Wake Up.

This week's winner is the entire Northwoods Community Secondary Rhinelander!

Every school year the 90 students at the 6th-12th grade school are expected to put in at least 50 hours of community service.

So, you can only imagine...all of the incredible work they do outside of the classroom.

The students have been helping out at the local thrift shop and food pantry for 3 years.

They stock shelves, do inventory, and help clean.

The students recently researched the history of Rhinelander... and took part in the Oneida County Courthouse Celebration.

They lined the streets in costume and offered free tours to people in the community.

And that's not all...the students took part in a project on the Rhinelander Oneida County Airport grounds.

They helped create a walking path for people to enjoy, while they wait for their plane.

And thanks to a 5,000 dollar grant from Cellular One, the students have been able to make house calls to hundreds of disabled and elderly people's homes, to rake leaves and shovel snow.

They also participate in an Adopt-a-Grandparent program, they visit Grace Lodge Assited Living, and share life stories, play games, and plan group activities with the elderly.

This is a fantastic example of what Class of the Week is all about.

The students focus on having a connection with the community and gain quite the education outside of the classroom.

We had a great time talking to the students and hearing all of the volunteer work they do around the Rhinelander community.

Congratulations, and keep up the good work you're efforts are not going unnoticed.

They've really set the bar high for this year's Class of the Week segment, if you would like your school to be on Wake Up Wisconsin be sure to email us at with all your nominations.

Every Friday at 6:30 on Wakeup...we recognize a different school for their accomplishments.
