AMHERST (WAOW)-- This week's Class of the Week winner is Mrs. Lutz's 4th grade class, at Amherst Elementary School!

While reading a book about a homeless family in Paris, the students brainstormed ideas on how they could help people having difficult times in our area.

They decided to make blankets and donate them to local families and charities in need of a little extra warmth this holiday season.

Mrs. Lutz wrote a grant and received money from the school's PTO for the fleece, and some of the materials were donated by the schools elementary student council, and community members.

The student's learned how to make no-sew fleece blankets, and 22 students worked hard on the gymnasium floor to get the project done.

When all the blankets were finished the students decided to give them to two families in Amherst who lost their homes to fires.

The rest of the blankets were given to the Portage County Red Cross, Operation Bootstrap, and the Family Crisis Center in Stevens Point.

The students had a great time making the blankets and their generosity and compassion truly brought warmth to those in need this holiday season.
