Class of the Week: 2/20 Sacred Heart School in Polonia
by Natalie Sparacio & Jeannie Prescott
POLONIA (WAOW)--This week's winners are the students at Sacred Heart School in Polonia.
This year's the schools theme for Catholic Schools Week was, "Catholic Schools Promote Service."
Faculty at the school wanted students to learn what it means to give back.
This week the students took part in what they call "Caroling at the Nursing Homes". They chose this time of year, because they felt nursing homes see lots of visitors around the holidays, and wanted to continue bringing good cheer to local senior citizens.
Parent volunteers drove the students to four different facilities in Portage County.
The students also just completed a children's auction at the school.
They raised 217 dollars for their sister school in Eagle Pass, Texas.
They did this by bringing in their own items, such as toys and books, and then bought the items from each other.
The sisters of the Eagle Pass then distribute the money to poor children in Mexico who need medical attention and school supplies.
In the past, Sacred Heart has even sent boxes of winter hats, gloves, and other supplies to those in need.
The students also raise money to protect rainforests, collect food for the needy, and send candy to soldiers.
We had the opportunity to visit with the students this week, and they were such a special group of kids.
They were so excited about this recognition, had great questions for us, and they truly deserve this honor.
