Class of the Week 2/27: D.C. Everest High School Accounting Students

WAKE UP WISCONSIN (WAOW)-- This week's winners are the accounting students at D.C. Everest High School.

Their teacher, Ms. Meronek says for years students came to her for help with their taxes.

So, she brainstormed an idea for her accounting classes.

Her goal was to have all of her accounting students learn how to prepare their own tax forms, so they could help teach other students how to prepare theirs.

Her idea became a reality, thanks to a $1,000 grant.

With that money, the school purchased tax books, and learned about the importance of client confidentiality and ethics.

Accountants from Virchow Krause even came to the classes, one of volunteers was a former D-C Everest grad.

Now that tax season is here, the students have taught their peers how to prepare their tax forms.

The classes made special announcements and posters to promote their tax help.

The project was such a success, a professional magazine called "On Board", will have an article on their efforts.

Even though professional accountants helped, the students offered the service for free and gained a lot of learning experience and appreciation for the accounting profession.

We had the opportunity to visit with the students this week, and we had a lot of fun learning about how helpful they've been to the student body.

If you would like your school to be on Wake Up Wisconsin be sure to email us at with all your nominations.

Every Friday at 6:30 on Wakeup...we recognize a different school for their accomplishments.
