WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- Teachers, parents, and students have all had to adjust as the coronavirus pandemic forced schools to close early and go virtual.

In addition, tutors also had to adjust their practices, and are now seeing a higher demand for their services.

Tutors and teachers were forced to step away from traditional methods of learning and teaching in order to best help their students.

Some have been able to adjust easily, where for others its been a learning curve.

With a new school year around the corner, some teachers call it a "summer slump" in retention once students return from summer break. But disruptions to school schedules and adjusting to e-learning could result in even bigger gaps.

"A teacher is kind of a little bit like an entertainer, they do hold your interest and they do keep you engaged. A computer doesn't do that the same way, so parents are having a hard time having their children understand and comprehend what they're learning when they can no longer keep them engaged in what they're trying to do," said Connie Heidemann, the Marathon County Literacy (McLit) Executive Director.

To meet the demand for tutors, Heidemann has been busier than ever, offering help in reading, math, writing, finances, health, computers, citizenship tests, and even filling out job applications. She also opened a new location near the 400 Block in Downtown Wausau.

The new location will help officials meet the need in the community immediately. And because they are a non-profit it's always free. All of the tutoring locations are:

  • Marathon County Public Library- 300 N First St. Wausau
  • Hmong American Center- 1109 N 6th St. Wausau
  • Everett Roehl Marshfield Library- 105 S Maple St. Marshfield
  • McLit Location- 515 N 3rd St. Wausau

As of right now each location is open Monday - Friday from 9 am - 4 pm
