WAUSAU (WAOW) — A successful Wausau businessman gets a shout out for making his community a better place.
Jim Nick takes home the Jefferson Award for his volunteer efforts.
"I believe that if I have the ability to help others-,that's what I should do," Jim Nick said.
Just days before Easter, Nick set up at account to give the feeding program at the Bridge Street Mission a boost.
"He offered $500 a month at Trig's so we can purchase things that aren't being donated," Craig Vincent of the Bridge Street Mission explains.
The mission serves the homeless and those who are in recovery.
Nick's "Help the Kids" fund has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for clothing, shoes and supplies for students in the D. C. Everest and Wausau schools.
"It has been a god send for so many of our students and their families," D.C. Everest School Superintendent Kristine Gilmore says.
Nick not only leads charitable causes of his own but helps out with others too.
He set up a group called Friends of Wausau 16-years ago.
It now includes more than 45 of his friends and business leaders working together.
It's something he says we can all do.
"Just pick charity and help them and get your friends to help to--it makes our society better," Nick says.
