Forest County Plane Crash

HILES, Wis. (WAOW) -- The NTSB has released a preliminary report into a fatal plane crash in the Northwoods late September.

Investigators say there was a transmission broadcast from the plane before it went down saying "mayday, mayday, mayday, we're in a spin."

Authorities say the plane was destroyed when it crashed near Hiles about 9 a.m. Sept. 28. The plane took off from the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport around 8:50 a.m.

The NTSB says the plane was being used to take aerial imagery of the forest vegetation for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

No cause was listed for the crash, and the victims have not been identified.
