Gil Holcombe, known for veteran philanthropy, dies

An area veteran, involved with many different veterans philanthropy and volunteer groups, dies unexpectedly at age 75.

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) - A big loss for the Greater Wausau area and its' veteran community as Gil Holcombe, 75, died this week.

Going affectionately by his first name, Gil was involved with many different veterans groups across north-central Wisconsin.

He was a service officer for the American Legion, a board member for Patriot K9's, and helped raise funds for numerous other veterans organizations.

"It's gonna be hard to replace someone who could do all the things he did," said Mike Heilmann, a Wausau veteran who worked with Gil. "It's gonna take more than one person for sure. It's gonna take some time."

Gil had been hospitalized for about three weeks before his death.

He was 75 years old.
