Refugee educational event explains to the community what to expect

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW)-- Refugee resettlement has been a hot bottom topic for months, now area groups supporting the transition for refugees coming to central Wisconsin.

New Beginnings for Refugees hosting a webinar Thursday night to give the greater Wausau area a chance to ask questions and learn what to expect when the refugees arrive.

The Ethiopians Community Development Council (ECDC) has recently been approved to move ten refugees to the greater Wausau area. The ECDC has applied to move 75 refugees by next October.

It is unknown at this time where the refugees moving to Wausau will be from.

New Beginnings Executive Director Gwendolyn Paul wants community members to understand the refugees will not be a drain on the system.

“One thing to remember is there is a lot of federal funding that is associated and support federally for refugees so that money will be directed to our area to support their beginning” said Paul.

The meeting featured panelists from different sectors including non-profits, faith-based organizations, area business and industry leaders.
