Wisconsin DNR issues warning after dog killed by wolves

Officials say a dog being trained for the fall bear hunt was killed in a wolf attack in Lincoln County last week.

TOWN OF RUSSELL, Wis. (WAOW) - Officials say a dog being trained for the fall bear hunt was killed in a wolf attack in Lincoln County last week.

Department of Natural Resources(DNR) officials say they're getting reports of wolf sightings over the area.

While they're active most of the year, it's especially true right now making it easy for them to collide with dogs training for hunting season.

Wolf packs have large territories, usually centered around a specific spot.

Right now, wolf pups are leaving the den and exploring that territory.

DNR officials say it's important for people to keep track of their dog, or better yet, make sure they're training in a place with little wolf activity.

"Keep your dogs close if you can. Keeping them on a leash is best obviously. If you're hunting and you see a lot of wolf activity, it's probably a good idea to get out of that space and go someplace else," said Randy Johnson of the DNR.

Experts say if your dog has a chip or GPS capabilities, that'll make it easier to keep a close eye on it in case something were to happen.
