MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst confirmed running back Chez Mellusi suffered a season-ending knee injury. Mellusi left Saturday's game against Rutgers with an injury and did not return.

"This week, Chez found out some more information, and he will be out for the rest of the season," Head Coach Paul Chryst said in a Thursday press conference. "That obviously saddens all of us."

Chryst does not expect him to recover in time for spring practices.

In nine games this season, Mellusi rushed for 815 yards (fifth-best in the Big Ten) and five touchdowns on 173 carries.

The junior transferred to Wisconsin from Clemson.

Freshman Braelon Allen will be the Badgers' top tailback. Allen has rushed for over 100 yards in each of the past five contests. Sophomore Julius Davis will also step into a bigger role. Davis earned his first opportunity this season against Rutgers, rushing for 32 yards on seven attempts.

The Badgers are tied for first place in the Big Ten West and will face Northwestern on Saturday at 11 a.m.
